Crist forms panel on criminal caregivers

The Associated Press
Tuesday, October 20, 2009

Gov. Charlie Crist has formed a group to review problems with criminal background checks for employees at facilities that care for children, the elderly and disabled people.

Crist said Tuesday he was forming the group in response to media reports that convicted felons are slipping through a process designed to screen them out of such jobs.

Certain employees at child day care centers, nursing homes, assisted living and other residential care facilities must pass a criminal background check.

The group will begin meeting Thursday. It includes officials from agencies for health care and people with disabilities and the departments of Children and Families, Elder Affairs, Health, Juvenile Justice and Law Enforcement.
